How to: Install and use the PC speaker driver with Windows 95.
Solution:
Download the self-extracting file Speak.exe from the Microsoft web site, ftp.microsoft.com/Softlib/MSLFILES/, and extract the contents. In the 'Control Panel' window, double-click the 'Add New Hardware' icon and install and configure the PC speaker.
NOTE: Install the PC speaker driver only if your computer does not have a sound card. The PC speaker driver plays only .wav files, and it may not produce high-quality sound on all computers.
1) Download the self-extracting file Speak.exe with Internet Explorer:
a) Click the 'Start' button to display the 'Start' menu.
b) Select 'Programs' and select 'Internet Explorer'. (The 'Microsoft - Internet Explorer' window appears.)
c) Type the following in the 'Address' drop-down list box:
FTP://FTP.MICROSOFT.COM/SOFTLIB/MSLFILES/SPEAK.EXE
d) Press ENTER. (The 'File Download' dialog box appears, followed by the 'Internet Explorer' dialog box.)
e) Select the 'Save it to disk' radio button and click 'OK'. (The 'Save As' dialog box appears.)
f) In the 'Save in' drop-down list, select the drive to which to save the file.
g) Select the appropriate folder and click 'Open'.
h) Click 'Save' to save the file.
NOTE: The 'File Download' dialog box will remain on the screen until the download operation is complete. The time required for this operation varies, depending on the speed of the Internet connection.
i) To exit Internet Explorer, select the 'File' menu and select 'Close'.
2) Extract the contents of the file Speak.exe:
a) Click the 'Start' button to display the 'Start' menu.
b) Select 'Find' and select 'Files or Folders...'. (The 'Find: All Files' dialog box appears.)
c) Type SPEAK.EXE in the 'Named' drop-down list box and click 'Find Now'. (The 'Find: All Files' dialog box expands to include the Speak.exe file.)
d) Right-click the file Speak.exe and select 'Open'. (The 'speak' MS-DOS window appears.)
e) Type the following at the MS-DOS prompt and press ENTER:

('Speak' extracts the following files into the selected folder: Audio.txt, License.txt, Oemsetup.inf, Speaker.drv, Speaker.txt.)
f) Click the MS-DOS icon at the top left corner of the 'Finished - speak' MS-DOS window. (A menu appears.)
g) Select 'Close' to close the 'Finished - speak' MS-DOS window.
h) Select the 'File' menu and select 'Close' to close the 'Find: All Files named Speak.exe' dialog box.
3) Install the PC speaker driver Speaker.drv:
a) Click the 'Start' button to display the 'Start' menu.
b) Select 'Settings' and select 'Control Panel'. (The 'Control Panel' window appears.)
c) Double-click the 'Add New Hardware' icon. (The 'Add New Hardware' wizard appears.)

d) Click 'Next'.
e) Select the 'No' radio button and click 'Next'.

f) In the 'Hardware types' list box, select 'Sound, video and game controllers' and click 'Next'.

g) Click 'Have disk...'. (The 'Install From Disk' dialog box appears.)
h) Do one of the following:
1] Type the full path of the folder where Speak.exe has been saved, in the 'Copy manufacturer's files from' box.
2] Browse for the folder where Speak.exe has been saved:
a] Click 'Browse...'. (The 'Open' dialog box appears.)
b] Select the drive to browse from the 'Look in' drop-down list.
c] Double-click the folder where Speak.exe has been saved.
d] Click 'OK'.
i) Click 'OK'. (The 'Select Device' dialog box appears.)
j) Select 'Sound Driver for PC-Speaker' from the 'Models' list box and click 'OK'.
k) To continue the installation, click 'Finish'. (The 'Copying files...' dialog box appears.)
NOTE: The PC speaker driver Speaker.drv may not be installed on the first attempt. In that case, another 'Copying files...' dialog box appears on top of the first one. The second 'Copying files...' dialog box will prompt for another attempt to copy Speaker.drv from the selected folder. If the path in the 'Copy files from' box is correct, click 'OK'.
l) To configure the PC speaker driver (Speaker.drv), adjust the sliders to the desired settings and click 'OK'. (The 'System Settings Change' dialog box appears.)
NOTE: The three sliders in the 'PC-Speaker Setup' dialog box allow you to change the speed, the volume, and the maximum number of seconds to playback a sound.
m) Click 'Yes' to restart the computer. (The computer restarts.)
n) Select the 'File' menu and select 'Close' to close the 'Control Panel' window.
